fathering and partnering workshops

A workshop series exploring the dimensions of fathering and parenting with partners.

Workshop #1

Modern Dads Legacy Retreat:  Bridging Your Past, Present and Future

How does your father, whether present or absent in your life, impact the kind of relationship you’re building with your children?  What will your legacy be? In this three quarter-day retreat, dads/ dad-figures will sort through their father’s legacy – the gifts he gave, the liabilities to watch out for – and create a vision for the kind of relationship they want with their children now and in the future. Through storytelling, powerful activities from the Modern Dad’s Handbook, and discussion, dads will leave with a clear sense of how to realize their vision of fatherhood.

Facilitator: JOHN BADALAMENT, Ed.M., international lecturer, author of The Modern Dads Handbook. His documentary, All Men Are Sons, aired nationally on PBS. John’s work has been featured on NPR and in Men’s Health, The Los Angeles Times, and The Rocky Mt. News. John is a graduate of Harvard’s Graduate School of Education.

Date: Saturday, September 6, 2008, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (lunch and morning snacks included).

Fee: $57.00

WORKSHOP #2:

The Maze of Contemporary Boyhood:  What Parents Can Do to Foster Connection and Dialogue

Do you ever feel like your boys are speaking another language, or do not speak at all? Are you concerned about what your boys are watching and what they are exposed to through gaming and internet forums? This workshop will focus on exploring modern media and how it influences our boys; from music videos to movies and video games to internet chat rooms. Workshop participants will explore and discuss the complex media landscape in which we are raising our children and learn the skills and develop the tools to help open communication channels and connect with boys.

Facilitators: JEFF MORRILL, LCSW, Boys to Men Program Coordinator and LAYNE GREGORY, LCSW, Boys to Men Executive Director.  Each a parent of two boys, Jeff and Layne have more than 30 years between them working with families and adolescents and delivering educational programs that address the specific gender needs of boys.

Date: Tuesday, October 7, 2008, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm (light snacks provided).

Fee: $25.00

WORKSHOP #3:

Leveraging Our Differences for Better Parenting

Many of us came together as couples because of our complimentary differences. However, those differences can become a source of tension regarding how to address our parenting challenges (example: “Our boys need more discipline.”  “No, you are too hard on them”, etc.). Very few of these differences can be solved by partners more strongly expressing
their individual views. This workshop is designed to enhance understanding and appreciate the value that these seemingly contradictory views can add in parenting our children. In addition, we will explore how couples can communicate about these complimentary differences in a way that brings us closer as partners and more fully supports effective parenting.

Facilitators: DICK HALSTEIN and LAYNE GREGORY, LCSW. Dick is a management consultant and B2M board member. He’s received extensive training from the Gestalt Institute and has worked with individuals, families, groups and organizations for over thirty years. Layne Gregory, LCSW, is the Executive Director of Boys to Men.

Date: Saturday, October 25, 2008, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (light snacks provided).

Fee: $25.00

Each workshop will be held at the beautiful Timbers Conference Room at the Youth Alternative Ingraham Family Center in South Portland (directions). Workshop participation is limited to 30 attendees per workshop.
